Columbia University Implements Reforms to Regain $400M in Federal Funding Amid Trump Administration Pressure

Mar 24, 2025

U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that Columbia University is making progress toward regaining federal funding after agreeing to implement policy changes mandated by the Trump administration.

Columbia Agrees to Policy Reforms

Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, McMahon described her discussions with Columbia’s interim president, Katrina Armstrong, as productive.

“She understands the responsibility of ensuring student safety on campus,” McMahon said. “She is committed to eliminating discrimination and addressing systemic issues related to antisemitism.”

As part of these reforms, Columbia has announced major changes, including placing its Middle East studies department under new supervision, revising protest and student discipline regulations, and adopting a broader definition of antisemitism. The university will also expand its Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies to promote intellectual diversity.

Federal Funding Freeze and Policy Demands

Earlier this month, the Trump administration revoked $400 million in federal research grants, citing concerns over the university’s handling of protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. To restore current funding and secure future federal grants, Columbia was required to implement nine major academic and security policy changes.

Criticism Over Government Intervention

Armstrong’s decision to comply with federal demands has sparked backlash from faculty members and free speech advocates, who argue that the administration’s actions threaten academic independence. Critics see the move as an unprecedented federal intervention in university affairs.

Columbia’s Path to Restoring Funding

When asked if Columbia’s reforms were sufficient to unlock federal funds, McMahon responded:

“We are now on the right track to finalize negotiations and restore the funding.”

Campus Unrest and Arrests

Columbia University has been at the center of controversy since last spring, when large-scale pro-Palestinian protests emerged on campus. The federal crackdown has heightened concerns that similar measures could extend to other universities nationwide.

On March 8, U.S. immigration authorities arrested activist Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident and spokesperson for the pro-Palestinian movement at Columbia. Khalil is currently fighting his detention and potential deportation in court.

Columbia University remains under scrutiny as it navigates compliance with federal directives while balancing academic freedom and student activism.
